Dartmouth Castle, perched above the River Dart about a mile out of town, can be reached by passenger ferry and there are plenty of boat trips available up river to Dittisham, Greenway and the ancient river port of Totnes. For a day on the beach, the spectacular bay and blue sea at Blackpool Sands (5 miles) or mile of unspoilt shingle beach at Slapton Sands are nearby and this is a glorious area for walkers, keen cyclists and sailing enthusiasts. Within an easy drive visitors can explore both Kingsbridge and Salcombe – a renowned centre for sailing and water sports of all kinds – as well as fascinating National Trust properties at Agatha Christie's Greenway Garden, Compton Castle and the magical garden and house at Coleton Fishacre. Shops and a pub serving food are 5 minutes' walk down the hill.
